Best eSIM for Japan

186 verified plans from 16 providers, compared side by side.

See all 186 plans

Japan's networks are NTT docomo, au (KDDI), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. Coverage in cities, on the Shinkansen and in most rural areas is excellent.

Many visitors weigh an eSIM against a rented pocket WiFi. An eSIM is simpler for one person; a pocket WiFi can be cheaper for a group sharing one connection — but it's another device to charge and return.

What to know before you buy

eSIM or pocket WiFi?

If you're travelling as a group, compare one pocket WiFi rental against an eSIM per person. If you're solo or the group splits up during the day, eSIMs avoid relying on whoever carries the router. Holafly documents a 1 GB per day hotspot allowance, which suits light sharing only.

Which network you get

Holafly lists KDDI and SoftBank. Airalo lists SoftBank plus one network it doesn't name. aloSIM lists KDDI. Saily lists KDDI and SoftBank. Ubigi lists KDDI, NTT Docomo and SoftBank, the only one of the seven to name docomo.
