eSIMs for multi-country trips

Check every stop is on the plan's country list. Borders are where single-country plans stop working.

Crossing borders is where travel data gets complicated. You can buy one plan per country or a regional plan that covers several. Either way, the plan has to list every place you'll be.

Border traps we've found

  • Holafly's Mexico eSIM can't be used in the United States.
  • Holafly's Saudi Arabia eSIM can't be used in the UAE or Qatar.
  • Holafly's Netherlands eSIM doesn't cover Belgium or other neighbours.
  • Holafly's China eSIM doesn't cover Hong Kong or Taiwan.

Regional plans

Regional plans can be simpler, but the country count on a provider's page isn't enough — you need the list. We only compare regional plans whose provider names every covered country. So far that's Ubigi: each of its regional plan pages lists every country and the network used there. aloSIM's regional pages gave country counts that didn't match their own lists when we checked, so we've left them out.

Using the trip finder

Add each country as a stop with the number of days you'll spend there. The finder shows plans that cover every stop if any exist, and otherwise the best plan per stop with the combined cost.

EU and EEA SIM holders can usually skip all of this inside Europe: roam-like-at-home covers the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Sources

Official = regulator or manufacturer. Provider = the seller's own page. Secondary = press or independent guides, used only where no official source was available.
