Australia's national telecommunications networks are Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom (Vodafone). In major cities and along populated coastal corridors, 4G LTE and 5G coverage is fast and widespread.

Australia completed the shutdown of all 3G mobile networks in late 2024. Connected devices must support 4G VoLTE on Australian frequencies — particularly Band 28 (700 MHz) — for both data and emergency calls.

What to know before you buy

3G shutdown and VoLTE requirement

Australia completely turned off all 3G networks in 2024 (Vodafone in January, Telstra and Optus in October). Devices must support 4G VoLTE — specifically LTE Band 28 (700 MHz) — to connect to data and emergency triple zero (000) services. Older 3G-only or incompatible international phones will receive no mobile signal.

Outback and regional network reach

Australia spans over 7.6 million square kilometres with vast uninhabited territory. Telstra covers over 99% of the population and has by far the largest regional and outback footprint. Optus and Vodafone offer strong metropolitan and highway coverage, but signal drops quickly once you venture into remote national parks or desert tracks.

Prepaid registration vs travel eSIM

Under Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) regulations, purchasing a local prepaid SIM in Australia requires identity verification with passport details. International travel eSIMs roaming on Australian partner networks connect upon arrival without local paperwork.
