Italy has four mobile networks: TIM, Vodafone, WindTre and Iliad. Cities and the main rail corridors are well covered; mountain valleys and parts of the south can be weaker.
Prices for unlimited plans are close between the providers we've verified, so the network list and the hotspot rules are often the better tie-breakers.
We may earn a commission if you buy through provider links. It doesn't change the order of plans. Affiliate disclosure

Check your home plan first if your SIM is from the EU or EEA
Under the EU's "roam like at home" rules, a SIM from any EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway can use its domestic allowance in Italy at no extra charge, subject to your operator's fair-use limit. If that's you, a travel eSIM may only make sense for extra data or if your allowance is small. Since 1 January 2026 the rules also cover Ukraine and Moldova.
UK SIMs are not covered by EU roaming rules
Since Brexit, UK networks set their own EU roaming charges, and many plans started after mid-2021 charge a daily fee. Check your contract: if you're paying a daily roaming fee, a 7-day eSIM is often cheaper for a week-long trip.
