Ireland's mobile telecommunications network is built by three primary infrastructure operators: Vodafone Ireland, Three Ireland, and Eir. 4G and 5G coverage is comprehensive across Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and national motorway corridors.

As an EU member state, Ireland is covered by the EU's "roam like at home" framework. Visitors travelling from outside the EU or crossing between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland can use travel eSIMs for predictable data pricing without roaming surprises.

What to know before you buy

Check your home plan first if your SIM is from the EU or EEA

Under the EU's "roam like at home" rules, a SIM from any EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway can use its domestic allowance in Ireland at no extra charge, subject to your operator's fair-use limit. If that's you, a travel eSIM may only make sense for extra data or if your allowance is small. Since 1 January 2026 the rules also cover Ukraine and Moldova.

Cross-border travel into Northern Ireland (UK)

If your itinerary includes Belfast or the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, your phone will transition to UK mobile networks. Check whether your travel eSIM includes both Ireland and the United Kingdom, or opt for a Europe regional plan covering both.

Wild Atlantic Way and coastal coverage

While urban areas enjoy fast 5G speeds, remote coastal headlands and national parks along the Wild Atlantic Way (such as parts of Connemara or the Ring of Kerry) may switch to 4G or experience signal variations.

Tips for staying connected in Ireland

  • If driving between Dublin and Belfast, ensure your plan covers both Ireland (EU) and the United Kingdom so you maintain continuous connectivity.
  • Enable data roaming on your travel eSIM profile upon landing at Dublin (DUB), Cork (ORK), or Shannon (SNN) airport.
  • Visitors holding an active EU/EEA domestic mobile plan can roam in Ireland under EU rules without purchasing an extra eSIM unless more data is needed.
