Brazil's national wireless market is led by Vivo (Telefônica Brasil), Claro (América Móvil) and TIM. Across metropolitan hubs like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília, 4G LTE and 5G coverage is fast and widely distributed.

Purchasing a local prepaid SIM card in Brazil legally requires a CPF tax registration number, which can be bureaucratic for foreign visitors to navigate. International travel eSIMs bypass the CPF requirement and activate upon arrival.

What to know before you buy

CPF tax ID requirement for local prepaid SIMs

Under Anatel regulations, activating a local physical Brazilian prepaid SIM card requires a CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) taxpayer number. While foreign tourists can theoretically register with a passport at authorized carrier stores, the process is often bureaucratic. International travel eSIMs operate on roaming agreements and require no CPF registration.

Vast geography and network frequency bands

Brazil spans 8.5 million square kilometres. Vivo generally provides the most reliable network footprint in smaller towns and ecotourism destinations like the Pantanal or Amazon basin, while Claro and TIM are strong in coastal metropolises. 4G uses Band 28 (700 MHz), Band 3 (1800 MHz) and Band 7 (2600 MHz).

Airport connectivity and transport apps

Major international airports including São Paulo–Guarulhos (GRU) and Rio de Janeiro–Galeão (GIG) have busy arrival terminals where having working cellular data is critical for booking official rideshare vehicles and navigating local transit.
