What to know before you buy

Real-name verification requirements

The National Communications Commission (NCC) requires real-name identity verification for local Taiwanese SIM cards, often requesting a passport plus a secondary identity document at carrier counters. Overseas travel eSIMs activate without domestic NCC paperwork.

VoLTE required after 3G shutdown

Taiwan completely decommissioned its 3G mobile network on June 30, 2024. All voice and data connectivity requires compatible 4G/5G hardware with Voice over LTE (VoLTE) enabled.

Mountain and gorge coverage

Coverage along the western high-speed corridor is dense and reliable, but signal can become intermittent in deep mountain gorges such as Taroko National Park and remote central mountain ranges.

Phones bought in Hong Kong and Macao

Apple notes that certain iPhone models manufactured for Hong Kong and Macao use two physical nano-SIM slots rather than an eSIM. Check your device using our compatibility tool before purchasing.
