Best eSIM for mainland China

169 verified plans from 16 providers, compared side by side.

See all 169 plans

Mainland China's networks are China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom and China Broadnet. Coverage is excellent in cities and along high-speed rail lines.

What makes China different is the Great Firewall: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and many other foreign services are blocked on local connections. Whether they work on a travel eSIM depends on where the provider routes your data.

What to know before you buy

Blocked apps and how routing changes that

Many travel eSIMs carry your data back through a gateway outside the mainland (often Hong Kong or Singapore), so blocked services can work without a VPN. This varies by provider and can change. Holafly says Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work on its China eSIM without installing a VPN. The Airalo, aloSIM and Ubigi China pages we checked didn't state how data is routed.

Mainland only

Holafly says Hong Kong and Taiwan need a separate eSIM from its China plan. If your trip includes Hong Kong, add it as a separate stop in the trip finder.

Phones bought in mainland China

Apple says that among iPhones sold in mainland China, only iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Check your phone before buying a travel eSIM — use our compatibility checker.

Tips for staying connected in mainland China

  • Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you go; many payments in China are made by QR code.
  • Download offline maps as a backup in case map services don't load.
